-는 대로 VS -자마자
Many Korean learners struggle to understand the difference between -는 대로 and -자마자.
Both can be translated as “as soon as” in English,
but they are not always interchangeable in Korean.
Let’s look at how they’re different.
1. -는 대로
It is used when one action happens right after another.
but it’s typically used to talk about what you plan to do after a future event.
It is followed by a future tense clause or a plan/intention
The following clause often includes expressions of suggestion, command, promise, or proposal.

1. 회의가 끝나는 대로 연락하겠습니다. I'll conntact you as soon as the meeting ends.
It works with past, present, and future tense.

1. 회의가 끝나자마자 팀장님에게 연락했습니다. I contacted my team leader as soon as the meeting ended.
2. 저는 보통 일어나자마자 물을 먼저 마셔요. I usually drink water first thing as soon as I wake up.
