What’s the Difference Between 일하다 and 근무하다?
Both 일하다 and 근무하다 mean “to work” in Korean.
However, they are used differently depending on the situation.
1. 일하다 : general word for “to work”
→ 일하다 is the most general and common way to say “to work” in Korean.
→ 일하다 can be used for any kind of work : full-time jobs, part-time jobs, housework, or even working on a project.
→ However, we don’t use ‘일하다’ when talking about studying, doing homework, or working on assignments.
I work full-time at Starbucks.
I usually work at the company from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
I worked from home during the COVID-19 pandemic.
I am working at a hospital in Seoul.
My father works at a government office.
I have worked at this company for 3 years.
→ 근무하다 sounds like you work in a formal or professional workplace, such as an office, hospital, or government organization.
→ That’s why it sounds strange when talking about jobs at stores, restaurants, or cafés, even if you work full-time.
→ 일하다 is much more natural in these situations.
3. When talking about work without mentioning a place
→ It sounds unnatural to say “저는 요즘 너무 많이 근무해요” in Korean
→ 근무하다 is usually used with a specific place, like “at the office” or “at the hospital”.
→ 일하다 sounds much more natural if you are just talking about the amount of work or your busy schedule, without mentioning a place.
