-기에 VS -기에는

If you are learning Korean,

you might have come across the grammar points '-기에' and '-기에는 (or '-기엔')

Since they look quite similar, it can be confusing to know when to use each one.

In this post, I will explain the differences with plenty of examples!

1. -기에 :  Reason or Cause

'-기에' is used to indicate a reason or cause, similar to '-아서/-어서.'

It explains why something happened or why a certain decision was made.

It is slightly formal and often appears in written or official contexts rather than casual conversation.

In spoken Korean, '-어서' is more commonly used instead of '-기에'.

< Examples >

1. 날씨가 악화되었기에 항공편이 취소되었습니다.  Due to worsening weather conditions, the flight has been canceled.

2. 기술적인 문제가 발생했기에 행사 일정을 변경하였습니다.  Due to a technical issue, the event schedule has been changed.

3. 예산이 부족하기에 해당 사업을 진행할 수 없습니다.  Due to insufficient budget, this project cannot be carried out.

4. 신청 인원이 많기에 추가 등록을 받지 않습니다.  Due to the high number of applicants, additional registrations will not be accepted.

5. 계약 조건이 변경되었기에 추가 논의가 필요합니다.  Since the contract terms have changed, further discussion is necessary.

2. -기에는(기엔) :  Standard for Judgment

'-기에는(기엔)' is used when making a judgment based on a certain standard

It means "for (some situation), it is..." or "considering (some situation), it is..."

Often used when expressing whether something is enough, too much, or appropriate based on a certain standard.

When speaking, '-기엔' is commonly used, while '-기에는' is mainly used in writing.

[Common Mistakes]

[1]

시간이 없기에는 못 갔어요. (X)

시간이 없기에 못 갔어요. (O) I couldn't go because I didn't have time.

-> It is a sentence that would be used in a formal or official setting.

-> If it were a casual conversation, '시간이 없어서 못 갔어요' would sound more natural.

[2]

이 회의실은 작기에는 불편해요. (X)

이 회의실은 작기에 불편해요. (O) This meeting is uncomfortable because it is small.

-> It is a sentence that would be used in a formal or official setting.

-> If it were a casual conversation, '이 회의실은 작아서 불편해요' would sound more natural.

이 회의실은 회의를 하에는(기엔) 작아요. (O) This meeting room is too small for holding a meeting.

-> Since it means that something does not meet the standard the speaker has in mind, '-기에는' sounds natural
