묻다 VS 물어 보다

Many Korean learners find it tricky to distinguish between ‘묻다’ and ‘물어 보다’ 

because both words mean "to ask.

However, in natural Korean, they are used in slightly different ways. 

Let’s break it down so you can use them correctly!

1. 묻다 :  A Direct and Neutral Way to Ask

- Focuses on the action of asking itself rather than the intention or the result.

- It is used in formal situations such as police investigations, journalism.

- It is typically used when asking serious questions in a serious or heavy atmosphere.

- also used to interrogate or hold someone accountable.

2. 물어 보다:  A More Conversational and Natural Way to Ask

- Adds a nuance of "trying to ask" or "asking to find out."

- Implies that the speaker is interested in the answer or reaction.

- Sounds softer and more natural in everyday speech.
