Why is '서울에 빌딩이 높아요' Incorrect?
Many Korean learners may mistakenly say "서울에 빌딩이 높아요."
because they are trying to describe the presence of tall buildings in Seoul.
However, this sentence is unnatural in Korean.
Instead, you should say '서울은 빌딩이 높아요.'
1) Why '서울에 빌딩이 높아요' is incorrect
- '서울에' focuses on existence (something being present in Seoul).
- However, "빌딩이 높아요(Buildings are tall)" is not about existence.
- "빌딩이 높아요(Buildings are tall)" describes the characteristics of buildings.
- Since '에' is used for location-related existence statements, it sounds unnatural here.
< Example >
서울에 빌딩이 높아요. ❌ (Unnatural because '높아요' describes a characteristic, not existence.)
서울에 빌딩이 있어요. ✅ (Correct because '있어요' describes existence.)
서울에 빌딩이 많이 있어요. ✅ (Correct because '많이 있어요' still describes existence.)
서울에 빌딩이 많아요. ✅ (Correct because '많아요' has the same meaning as '많이 있어요')
2) Why '서울은 빌딩이 높아요' is correct.
- '서울은' sets Seoul as the topic and describes its characteristic.
- We are not talking about whether buildings exist in Seoul (which would require '에').
- Instead, we are describing how the buildings in Seoul tend to be (i.e., their height).
- '은/는' can be used with '있어요' when it has a comparative nuance.
< Example >
서울은 빌딩이 높아요. ✅
(Correct because '서울' is the topic, and we describe its general characteristic.)
서울은 빌딩이 있어요. 🌟
(might be correct , but it is only used when comparing Seoul to another city.)
서울에 빌딩이 있어요. ✅
(If there is no comparative nuance, it is more appropriate to use '에' when using '있어요')
가: 제주도에 빌딩이 별로 없어요.
나: 맞아요. 하지만 서울은 빌딩이 있어요.
(In this dialogue, Seoul is being used as a city compared to Jeju.)
[Summary]
- Use '에' when talking about the existence of something in a place.
- Use '은/는' when describing a characteristic, or when '있어요' carries a comparative nuance.

<Answer>
1. 제주도는 공기가 맑아요. (The air in Jeju is clean.)

- describing a characteristic of Seoul’s buildings (that they are tall).

- describing a characteristic of the flowers in this park (that they are pretty).
5. 이 공원에 / 이 공원은 꽃이 많이 있어요. (There are many flowers in this park.)
- 공원에 → talking about the presence (existence) of many flowers in the park.
- 공원은 → It could sound like a comparison, meaning this park has more flowers than others.
