직접 VS 스스로
Many Korean learners confuse '직접' and '스스로'
because both can be translated as "by oneself" in English.
However, they have different meanings and are used in different situations.
Let's break them down clearly with examples!
I Do It Myself (Instead of someone else)"
- 직접 is used when YOU personally do something instead of someone else doing it for you.
- The important point is that you are the one performing the action, not delegating it.
→ The speaker cooked the dish themselves instead of someone else doing it.
(I personally chose my parents' gift.)
→ The speaker chose the gift themselves rather than letting someone else pick it for them.
(You must submit this document in person.)
→ The document must be submitted by you, not by someone else.
(Go and check it yourself.)
→ Encouraging someone to personally verify something instead of relying on others’ words.
<Key Point>
Please use '직접' when YOU do something instead of delegating it to someone else.
I Do It on My Own (Voluntarily and Independently)"
- '스스로' is used when someone acts voluntarily without being told.
- '스스로' fits well in situations that show self-direction, responsibility, and independence.
- The key point is that the person made decisions and acted without any help from others.
< Examples >
(My daughter wakes up by herself in the morning.)
→ It means the child gets up well on their own without their parents telling them to.
(The child does their homework by themselves.)
→ It means the child does their homework voluntarily, without being told by their parents.
(Riku decided on his own to go to work early.)
→ It means no one at work told him to come early—he made that decision voluntarily.
< Key Point >
Please use '스스로' when the action is done without anyone's orders, pressure, or suggestions.
