돈을 내다? 결제하다? 계산하다? 납부하다?

Many Korean learners find it confusing to distinguish between

‘(돈을) 내다’, ‘결제하다,’ ‘계산하다,’ and ‘납부하다.’

Since all of them can be translated as “pay” in English,

it’s easy to assume they are interchangeable.

However, each has a specific meaning and is used in different contexts.

Let’s break them down with explanations and examples!

1. 내다

- The most general and commonly used term for "paying"

- Used in everyday conversations when referring to paying money in general.

- Works for cash, card, or any payment method.

< Example >

제가 밥값을 냈어요(I paid for the meal.)

- 입장료를 내야 들어갈 수 있어요. (You have to pay the entrance fee to get in.)

- 한국에서 버스를 탈 때 1500원을 내야 해요. (In Korea, you have to pay 1,500 won to take the bus.)

- 재희 씨가 커피를 샀으니까 이번에는 제가 돈을 낼게요(재희 paid for coffee, so this time I’ll pay.)

< Key Tip >

'내다' is a natural, spoken Korean phrase and is used for casual transactions like food, tickets, and small purchases.

2. 결제하다

Making a payment through a specific transaction method (card, mobile, bank transferetc.)

Used in more formal or business-like settings and often refers to paying with a card, app, or online payment.

It focuses on the act of processing a payment.

Therefore, when using '결제하다,' it should be paired with '(으)로' to indicate the payment method.

< Example >

- 카드 결제해 주세요. (Please pay by card.)

인터넷 쇼핑몰에서 신용카드 결제했어요. (I paid with a credit card on an online shopping mall.)

무이자 할부 결제할 수 있나요? (Can I pay in interest-free installments?)

- 계좌 이체 결제할 수 있나요? (Can I make a payment via bank transfer?)

< Key Tip >

결제하다 is more formal and technical than ‘돈을 내다.’

- It is commonly used in business, banking, online shopping, and mobile payments.

3. 계산하다

- Calculating the total price before paying

- Means "to calculate" or "to settle the bill"

- It is often used in restaurants or stores when you need to check or confirm the total amount.

< Example >

여기 계산해 주세요(Please check me out here. / Please calculate my total and let me pay.)

- 도훈 씨가 밥값을 계산하고 나갔어요. (도훈 paid the bill before leaving.)

- 커피를 다 마신 다음에 계산해도 됩니다(You can pay after finishing your coffee.)

- 친구랑 저는 따로 계산할게요. (My friend and I will split the bill.)

< Example >

'계산하다' is used in situations where you are confirming or checking the price before handing over the payment.

- In restaurants, people often say "계산해 주세요" or "계산 할게요to request the bill.

4. 납부하다

Official payments like taxes, bills, and tuition fees

Used in formal, legal, or financial situations.

< Example >

- 세금을 제때 납부해야 해요(You must pay your taxes on time.)

- 10일은 핸드폰 요금을 납부하는 날이에요. (The 10th is the day to pay the phone bill.)

- 등록금을 납부해야 수업을 들을 수 있어요. (You must pay your tuition to take classes.)

- 전기 요금을 납부하는 것을 잊지 마세요. (Don’t forget to pay the electricity bill.)

< Key Tip>

납부하다 is NOT used for everyday purchases like coffee or clothes.

- It is primarily used for government or institutional payments (bills, taxes, tuition, etc.).
